Volunteer Corner: Summer Opportunities

May 14, 2010

Kim Hope Athay is IRIS’s volunteer coordinator. She is in charge of working with volunteers and short-term host families for various programs.¬† Kim also works with the YES program.

As IRIS’s volunteer coordinator, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to meet with excited, community- and global-citizens here in Iowa. Thanks to each of you who has donated your time to making IRIS’s goals possible.

Each semester, we have several volunteers and interns who help out in our office. Thanks to Allison Baird, Patrick Howell, Kelsey Kelley and Natasha Sheyko for your hard work and dedication. Your enthusiasm and commitment meant the world to me and the rest of the IRIS staff.

I’d also like to thank all of the short-term volunteer hosts. Some of you get calls at the last minute for students who randomly stop in town. Some of you have been hosts for years. Some of you are brand new hosts helping out with our Serbia program!¬†Without your continued commitment to being ready and available to welcome our international guests into your homes, IRIS would never be able to help our guests truly understand Americans and our lifestyles. Your hospitality and generosity are unmatched. Thank you for all that you do.

Summer volunteer opportunities

In the last few months, I’ve had many people ask me if there will be opportunities volunteer in IRIS’s office this summer. At this point, we are unsure about what programs we will be working on in the next couple of months, and therefore, I hesitate to promise that I’ll have steady work for office volunteers.

However, please continue to check your e-mails and our newsletter – I’ll definitely keep you all posted as we have projects that we need extra help with!

For volunteer hosts, we do plan to have another short term group here later this summer, so stay tuned as I start finding homes for them around Iowa!
