From Tahrir Square to Capitol Square: Meet Mohamed Zarkani

April 11, 2011

This month, IRIS is hosting an international visitor from Egypt!

Mohamed Zarkani, 29, is the program director of the Young Innovators Awards Program in Cairo, Egypt. He’s visiting Iowa as part of a USAID short-term training program. The goal of this program is to enhance the capacities of key local leaders and activists.

The Young Innovator Awards Program aims to positively impact the scientific culture in Egypt through supporting research and development activities; empowering and developing scientists, engineers and researchers; and creating linkages between university research and industrial applications.

The program includes a 4 day/week professional internship at the Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines, where he is meeting with staff to learn about project management, fundraising, staff development and more.

As you can imagine, Mohamed has many incredible stories of the recent events in Egypt. He took part in the revolution and marched to Tahrir Square with hundreds of thousands of fellow protesters.

If you have questions you’d like to ask Mohamed for a follow-up piece, please leave them in the comments!
